The Box Steam Brewery started in 2004 in Box and near the famous “Box Tunnel” designed by the great Isambard Kingdom Brunel. The beers were a hit and we quickly outgrew the Box site so with heavy hearts but exciting prospects, we moved to a new premises in Holt, where the water has unique properties ideal for brewing.
Since then we’ve been brewing up a storm and have grown from selling 4753 pints in 2006 to 1,550,407 in 2019.
Our brands are themed around the age of steam and include:
Tunnel Vision 4.2% abv Smooth Amber Bitter - named after Isambards Kingdon Brunels vision for the tunnel which at 1.83 miles long was the longest rail tunnel in the world at that time.
Piston Broke 4.5% abv Hoppy Golden Ale - Pistons were sealed with leather valves which frequently became damp and broken
Funnel Blower 4.5% abv Dark Vanilla Porter - Inspired by Isambard Kingdon Brunels Steam ship "Great Eastern" that had 5 steam funnels one which was blown clean off by too much steam
Soul Train 4.5% abv White Blonde IPA - Some believed the new steam locomotives could trigger passengers souls to have dark desires and cause instant insanity ... this is now the breweries best seller
Derail Ale 5.2% abv Refreshing IPA - in memory of John Chiddy who in 1876 gave his life to stop the Flying Scotsman derailing near Bristol
All the above are brewed using the unique "steam infused" method that gets the most from the hops used in our brewing
